  4. Reinterpreting the Empathy-Altruism Relationship: When One Into One Equals Oneness.Robert B. Cialdini, Stephanie L. Brown, Brian P. Lewis, Carol Luce & Steven L. Neuberg - 1997 - Journal of Personality and Social Psychology 73 (3):481-494.
Important features of the self-concept can be located outside of the individual and inside close or related others. The authors use this insight to reinterpret data previously said to support the empathy-altruism model of helping, which asserts that empathic concern for another results in selflessness and true altruism. That is, they argue that the conditions that lead to empathic concern also lead to a greater sense of self-other overlap, raising the possibility that helping under these conditions is not selfless but (...)

Miller, George Smith, Peter Schwenger, Bernadette Wegenstein, Rosi Braidotti, Rosalyn Diprose, Dorota Glowacka, Heinz Kimmerle, Purushottama Bilimoria, Sally Percival Wood & Slavoj Z.¡ iz¡ek (eds.) - 2010 - Lanham, Md.: Lexington Books.
As an alternative to universalism and particularism, Intermedialities: Philosophy, Arts, Politics proposes "intermedialities" as a new model of social relations and intercultural dialogue. The concept of "intermedialities" stresses the necessity of situating debates concerning social relations in the divergent contexts of new media and avant-garde artistic practices as well as feminist, political, and philosophical analyses.

Interpersonal comparisons of utility for 2 of 3 types of people.R. Duncan Luce - 2010 - Theory and Decision 68 (1-2):5-24.
This article argues that there is a natural solution to carry out interpersonal comparisons of utility when the theory of gambles is supplemented with a group operation of joint receipts. If so, three types of people can exist, and the two types having multiplicative representations of joint receipt have, in contrast to most utility theories, absolute scales of utility. This makes possible, at least in principle, meaningful interpersonal comparisons of utility with desirable properties, thus resolving a long standing philosophical problem (...)

    A note on a recent paper by Dagsvik on IIA and random utilities.P. O. Lindberg & Tony E. Smith - 2017 - Theory and Decision 82 (2):305-307.
In a recent paper in this journal, Dagsvik derives the class of independent random utility representations that are “equivalent” to the independence-from-irrelevant-alternatives assumption by Luce. In this short note, we clarify the relations between this paper by Dagsvik, and a paper in Lindberg’s 2012 thesis.

    The Body: Classic and Contemporary Readings. [REVIEW]Erich P. Schellhammer - 2000 - Review of Metaphysics 53 (4):965-966.
The Body contains excerpts of mainly Continental philosophers contemplating the body. The texts are characterized by envisioning the body to be more than a Cartesian thing that can be measured in terms of space and time. The book is divided into three parts. Each part displays the texts from important and often historical scholars as well as contemporary analyses of these writings. Part 1, entitled “Phenomenological Formulations,” contains texts from Edmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger and Maurice Mer-leau-Ponty. Part 2, entitled “Psycho- (...)

Hitherto, the standard edition of Berkeley's works has been A. C. Fraser's of 1901, published by the Oxford University Press. The chief differences between the two editions are these. Professors Luce and Jessop give of each text the latest edition published by Berkeley himself, adding all significant variations in any earlier editions in footnotes, whereas Fraser followed no uniform procedure, and sometimes combined different editions. This difference is obviously an improvement. Further, Professor Luce's edition of Berkeley's pair of (...)

Je, Tu, Nous: Towards a Culture of Difference.Luce Irigaray - 1992 - New York: Routledge.
A passionate celebrator of "sexual difference," Luce Irigaray was never simply after the social equality that her generation so publicly demanded. She was seeking more fundamentally a society that celebrated the differences between the genders and their coming together in a union without hierarchy. As she formulates it in this compellingly readable introduction to her own thought, Irigaray is writing about how "I" and "You" become "We." Exploring along the way women’s experiences of motherhood, abortion, the AIDS crisis and (...)

In this article, we present results from a literature review of intrinsic, instrumental, and relational values of nature conducted for the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, as part of the Methodological Assessment of the Diverse Values and Valuations of Nature. We identify the most frequently recurring meanings in the heterogeneous use of different value types and their association with worldviews and other key concepts. From frequent uses, we determine a core meaning for each value type, which is (...)

    Social niche construction and evolutionary transitions in individuality.P. A. Ryan, S. T. Powers & R. A. Watson - 2016 - Biology and Philosophy 31 (1):59-79.
Social evolution theory conventionally takes an externalist explanatory stance, treating observed cooperation as explanandum and the positive assortment of cooperative behaviour as explanans. We ask how the circumstances bringing about this positive assortment arose in the first place. Rather than merely push the explanatory problem back a step, we move from an externalist to an interactionist explanatory stance, in the spirit of Lewontin and the Niche Construction theorists. We develop a theory of ‘social niche construction’ in which we consider biological (...)

A new perspective on Antisthenes: logos, predicate and ethics in his philosophy.P. A. Meijer - 2017 - Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press.
Antisthenes (c. 445- c. 365 BC), was a prominent follower of Socrates and bitter rival of Plato. In this revisionary account of his philosophy in all its aspects, P. A. Meijer claims that Plato and Aristotle have corrupted our perspective on this witty and ingenious thinker. The first part of the book reexamines afresh Antisthenes' ideas about definition and predication and concludes from these that Antisthenes never held the (in)famous theory that contradiction is impossible. The second part of the book (...)

Which of two individuals do you treat when only their ages are different and you can't treat both?P. A. Lewis & M. Charny - 1989 - Journal of Medical Ethics 15 (1):28-34.
A relative value of life dependent on age has been produced from a survey of 721 randomly selected individuals together with other observations of professional practice. The results are presented in diagrammatic form. If two identical people, except for age, present for medical treatment for a life-threatening condition and only one can be treated then the diagram indicates what the choice should be.

Current focus in the health care ethics literature on the character of the practitioner has a reputable pedigree. Rather than offer a staple diet of Aristotelian ethics in the undergraduate curricula, perhaps instead one should follow Murdoch's suggestion and help the practitioner to develop vision and moral imagination, because this has a practical rather than a theoretical aim. The imaginative capacity of the practitioner plays an important part in both the quality of the nurse's role enactment and the moral strategies (...)

A principle that many have found attractive is one that goes by the name “'Ought' Implies 'Can'.” According to this principle, one morally ought to do something only if one can do it. This essay has two goals: to show that the principle is false and to undermine the motivations that have been offered for it. Toward the end, a proposal about moral obligation according to which something like a restricted version of 'Ought' Implies 'Can' is true is floated. Though (...)
